Last time here at Icethunder.net we talked about the less important features you would need for your hosting life. I described them briefly and today I will talk about them and how they would and should influence your search for the right hosting company.
Web site access (FTP accounts)
Why is web site access so important? Well, because I am sure you want to upload your web site in some way to the web space you are given by your hosting company. And, frankly, FTP is the easiest way to do so. I talked about FTP and other ways of uploading content to and downloading it from your web space here, here, here and here. Check them out!
Now you have read the other articles and know what an FTP is and what other way to access your web space exist. Let’s decide what weight the number of FTP accounts and the lack of FTP altogether will have on our decisions. It’s good to have many FTP accounts, but companies tend to advertise somewhere between 1 to 25 accounts per account.
This means you will be able to create e.g. 25 ftp accounts with with 25 different passwords [recommended],but I do not see the point of having so many accounts. It does not have any meaning if you are only trying to host one web site with no sub-domains. Lots of FTP accounts make sense if you want to use each account for a different purpose. For example you have 3 domain names all with different content on one hosting account and thus you would set up three FTP account and each would be only allowed to access the / [root] folder of one single domain name. It’s good for security

What weight should you put on this feature? Well, I think, if you have the intention to use more than one domain name and all of them will have different content it would be wise to have more than one account. But remember you will need to remember more passwords [this is no real problem with programs like PasswordSafe] and you would want to restrict each FTP account only to one domain name and it’s folder
Email accounts
I think, it always looks more professional if a business sends and receives it’s emails trough it’s own email address e.g. some_name@domain_name.com looks better, than some_name@gmail.com if you are a business
Hosting companies tend to offer different amounts of email accounts you can actually create on your domain name, but many of them offer 100+ accounts. The limit is than, set in words “Space for email” = 2GB and this limits all your accounts to a maximum of 2 000 MB used by all of them together. Don’t forget, that some hosting companies don’t state this limit, but you are limited by the hard disk space you are given for your web pages
If you are going to need many email aliases, than it would make sense to rate this feature as a very important one, but if you are only going to need a few of them, than his feature can be skipped altogether. What I recommend to look at is what protocol th hosting company offers with their email accounts – POP3 or IMAP as this tends to be more important, than the number of accounts you can create!
Email accounts finished this article and I am looking forward to the next one
Have a nice day and see you next time. As always you are more than welcome to ask questions or give you own experience
