Searching for a hosting package of your dreams can be a little bit frustrating and sometimes boring, but I think we can have a lot of fun. At the end of this small series you can tell me if it was fun or not
I think, you have run into this problem at least a dozen times before. You are standing in a shop and try to decide which of the two great products should you buy? The one has better characteristics, but on the other hand the other has a better support provided and fast delivery times. But you are prepared and during your life you have come up with a strategy which you use when buying goods. You decide according to a strategy you “invented” over time and you don’t even realize it.
Well, it’s the same with web hosting packages. You need to decide and before you can do this you need to come up with a methodology as I doubt, that you are buying hosting plans all the time. I will talk here about one such strategy. Fell free to use the one I will describe in this and the next article and you are free to modify it to fit your needs.
First things first
While on the hunt for a great hosting experience [read great hosting package] you need to make clear what you are looking for. Else you will be without any goal and this is never very good. To set a visible goal you are trying to reach is very important. It’s very essential to have a detailed goal – all the needs need to be written down and only than should you start your search.
How to describe my goals
At first it might seem it is hard to describe someone goals. Especially when you have not been in the hosting business before. You don’t know exactly what you are searching for and this is perfectly fine. All you need at this stage is to have a vision of a goal. You need to know what you are searching for.
Your goals should be described in the words of resources you will most likely need. These are the resources you think your web site will need. You should not underestimate them , but you should not overestimate them, too.
I know it’s easy to tell “not overestimate” and “not underestimate”, but I can tell you I have done this before and I did over and under estimated my needs
It’s fine you are learning throughout your whole life and the next time you will do better.

The estimations
You have to think about the resources and not about the other features like the number of emails accounts available, number of FTP accounts provided by the host. These are not that crucial to your web site. I don’t think you would need more than 2-3 FTP accounts or 20 000 email accounts – maybe you will not even use more than one
The most important things to think about while setting up your goals are:
- Bandwidth
- You need to know how much data your web site will consume. Bandwidth is the amount of data transfer from and to your web site. I have written about how to calculate it and a little bit more in my previous articles. It would be good to look at this article (click).
- Web space (server space)
- This is another very important feature. You need to know how much hard disk space your site will consume as you will not be able to put more than 5GB of data on a plan which tells you, that you are allowed to use 3GB

Well, let’s stop this article right here and continue in the next one
Have a nice day and feel free to ask questions or give your opinions related to the issues
