In the last article I talked about “what is better?”. Going with a big company with tons of money, or to try and go with a smaller hosting provider who has a better support and is more personal and tries to make you a satisfied customer? Today I would to expand on this article and look a little bit closer at the small guys and my thoughts about them.
A newbie or not – it does not matter…
If you are a newbie to web hosting, or if you have some knowledge it does not matter. I think that everyone knows how much web hosting advertisements there are around the web. It’s a little bit funny, because many times it’s the advertisement that makes you buy from a company. Why is that? Because many times you can see the same advertisements on different websites, review sites and forums and thus you think this company should be really great. You see the hosting company is everywhere and because it has so many advertisements around the Internet world you go and buy. But sometimes the opposite is true. You should think carefully, because advertisement is one thing and the service you get is another!
Why don’t underestimate the small or smaller guys in the hosting business???
Well, that’s the question. They do not have the money to promote their web site on very hosting review site on the Internet. They do not have the money to come up in Google search results in the top spots when a user searches for “web hosting” keywords.
But what they many times have is – they care about their customers, because they know they need them. They know their customers are the added marketing value. Their customers can promote their service with word of mouth and they do not need to pay anything extra. All the need to do is to satisfy their current customers and the good “aura” will promote itself! You are right – they need the advertisements, too. They pay for Adwords, too. But many times it’s a friend of yours who recommends you such a company. Or it’s a bunch of guys on a web hosting forum who recommend them and write reviews about their service!
I do not tell you to go straight away after reading this article to search for a small, not so visible hosting provider, but what I am trying to tell you is to don’t underestimate them and try to consider them, too. It’s because they might offer you a more pleasant experience then a big company! Their support service could be better and more personal, but keep in mind that a even hosting company needs to pay it’s bills and thus if you see too good offers to be true try to ask and check such a company out before signing!

What I like about smaller companies and what’s small in my opinion?
Under small I do not mean that such a company has one rented server unit and tries to seel something. I consider a company small if they do not have so many advertisements around the web. When I started to search for my first ever hosting plan I was overwhelmed with advertisements on one “white & blue” hosting company. I signed up. And I can tell you my experience was good for the whole term with them. Only after I signed up I checked out some forums and read nothing, but bad reviews about them… But that’s another story…
Thus small does not mean they are small and have little resources. It’s that they are not so visible! There are hosts out there with tons of adverts, but their service is sometimes more then worse if you compare them to a “smaller host”… . But the smaller guys are promoted by their customer and their reviews.
And here is another problem. When people are happy with a service they rarely make a review on a forum or hosting review site! But if people have problems they post the same article around the web on every web site! And this is ridiculous in some way…
What I consider small in this article:
- A company without advertisements on all the websites dedicated to web hosting
What such small companies can offer to you?
- Better and more friendlier support
- A more personal feeling and faster response times as they care about their customers
- Their prices may seem higher or lower – it depends on the host you have found [and the offer]
- Many times they have special promotions and offers – just ask them or look around the web for a coupon
Well it’s a already a long article, but there is one thing I want to make sure you understand. Small is not tiny. There are also “tiny” web hosting companies and those are the ones who just rent a server, or resell a service. They do not have 10+ employees and a support desk dedicated just to supporting customers. They are many times a one or two man show and they have not been covered in this article! Of course they could provide the same level of good service as “small” companies, but it depends…
Have a nice day and good luck on your search!
