I have come across this question fairly frequently in the last couple of months. It’s the problem of understanding what is the “server name” you have to fill in while signing up for a VPS server. I think you know, that while buying a VPS server from a web hosting company you are asked to fill in the name of the server. But what is it? How you know what to fill in? I’ll try to answer this question in the next couple of lines.
What’s the server name in VPS?
Most of the time the name of the server would be something easy as server1.your_domain.com and what this name does is it assigns this name to the server in the SolusVM control panel and you can use it in your DNS settings etc., but if you do not use it anywhere nothing really happens. It is only a name and does not have any special function. You have to fill it out, but you do not need to use it afterwards. Your hosted web site would be easily accessed, your mail server would be accessed etc. even without this name being filled out, but it needs to exist to uniquely identify the server.
server1 – this is the name of the server. You can use different names here, but something like server1 or server is a very common choice.
your_domain.com – this is your actual domain name. You should own this domain name to use it…
SolusVM resources
As SolusVM is a very frequently used control panel for VPS hosting I think it is very essential to know where to look for some expert help on anything related to this control panel. The first place to go is solusvm.com as this is the panel’s official web site. There are all the major links available from an easy to navigate menu.
The control panel has a WIKI page available and a FORUM as well. These are the resources you should use as soon as you have some kind of problem with your SolusVM control panel. But remember – most of the problems should be first checked by your web hosting company and if no solution is available go to these place and seek for help

SolusVM is the first CP to be described and as I stated earlier I’ve seen some people asking questions about what’s the “server name” and “why does it need to exist”… and so I decided to give at least a quick answer with this article
