In the last article I talked about small hosting companies. As I explained I did not meant companies with one or two servers. I meant companies which do not need to put advertisements everywhere to convince people they are trustworthy and that they offer great service. these “small companies” from my previous post are the ones who offer their customer a great service and are willing to help them out.
At the end of the article I mentioned, that there is also a group of web hosting companies I would call “tiny”, because they really do not have the space and marketing budget of the “big guys” neither they have the space and charm of the small companies. But they do exist.
The space they offer is smaller. The team behind such a company is small and there are different ways these companies could operate.
“Tiny hosting companies” & the way they can operate
The shared hosting reseller
As said before there are many ways such a company could be operated. I think that many of you already came across the term Reseller hosting. In simple words explained it’s a package offered by e.g. Hostgator/1and1/Hostmonster etc. where you are given a certain amount of bandwidth, server space and a Control panel to manage your small reselling company. You sell this allocated resources to your clients and get cash in return. You pay payments to your host for the reseller package and collect monthly payments from your customers for the packages you sell to them. Whether your client knows you are a reseller of company XY depends on two facts:
- You tell it directly to your client
- Your client is smart enough and he finds it out on his own
The guy with a dedicated server
The price for a dedicated server is not that huge. Well, it’s quite big if you are not able to generate a revenue stream to cover the costs, but if you can than it’s not that big. The second category as you can guess from the heading is a person who buys a dedicated server from a hosting company. He sets up his server and sell the resources on this server. The level of this service depends on the server reliability and the ability of the person behind such a service. If he is not able to set it up properly and has only bought a limited management package from the dedicated server company than you might be in some sort of problem.
The prices in this category can vary and you should always make sure, that if you decide to buy from this type of company that he does not oversell to much his server, else problems for your website could arise.
I would count VPS servers in here too, because they might be used for this type of hosting too, if they would be puwerfull enough, but I did not run into such a type in my life.. If you did than please leave your comment and experience in the comments section below this article

To fear or not to fear?
Well, that’s a good question. I would not say you should avoid this type of companies. They can offer you a very good level of service, but be prepared to thoroughly check them out before you go into a deal with this type as there are the good ones and the bad apples as well. It’s up to the buyer to decide!
What’s a tiny company according to my opinion?
- A company with only one or two [three, for] servers
- A company reselling services of a bigger company
- A company with one or two dedicated servers
What would I look at if I would see a good offer from such a company?
- How long they have been in business
- What are the Terms of Service, Acceptable use policy and Fair usage policy
- How much resources they offer [someone with a 250GB dedicated server can't really offer you unlimited space -he can offer unmettered though. Remember with a 100Mb/s link there is a speed & bandwidth limit, too]
- Reviews from other customers
- I would definitely write an email to support & wait for the response to check them out too
I think that’s all I can tell you about the “tiny” category and what steps would I take before signing up with such a type. Hopefully you will have a good hand at choosing the right company for your needs. Have a nice day!
