The restrictions of shared web hosting

I think, that many of you have coma across the fact, that shared hosting is not a dedicated server. You can not use as many resources as you would like and from time to time your host even tells you this in a “friendly” reminder email :) When you entered and decided to buy a shared package you thought you would be able to use all the resources of the shared server if you would needed to, but the opposite is true.

Why are there limits on shared hosting?

You can use as many of the resources as you like, but only if you do not harm other users on the server. And because it’s hard to tell each customer to behave in a good manner hosting companies just went the only available way. They decided to put hard set limits on each account created on a server.

I think it should not be a new thing to many of you, but yes a server is just a computer with special software, that makes this “PC” a server. And this software is of course configurable ;) And what is configurable can be of course adjusted right to your needs and thus hosting companies configure it to fit :

  1. their needs
  2. fit their Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy

I think, that no one can think anything bad about this as these limits help everyone who is on the server. They make it possible, that there are such low prices on the shared hosting market. The configuration limits allow each user to use only a set amount of system resources at any given time.

What limits are there?

Many of you might regard the lack of email addresses you can create as a limit, but it’s not. Some of you might regard the only 2 FTP accounts as a limit, but it’s not as well :) Limits in this regard are limits made on the system and the resources side. You are limited in the way how many:

  1. simultaneous MYSQL connections your site can have
  2. how much CPU your site can use
  3. how much RAM can your site consume
  4. and everything related to hardware &/or Software ;)

It might look like you are not given your fair share of the resources at some times, but remember, that you are not alone on the server! If you wanna more resources or your side needs them very much, than go and buy a VPS which will come with dedicated CPU/RAM and Software limits are at your own discretion, or buy a dedicated server and you will get even better performance than with a VPS ;)

Usually the number of MYSQL limit can be found somewhere between 15-50 simultaneous connections and this does not mean, that if your side is attended by 51 people at the same time, that the 51 would not get to the site for the next couple of minutes, but rather it means he will get an “error” message and after he refreshes the site everything will work OK ;) The time a process executes does not take hours, it is just a couple of seconds and even much less!

Have a nice day and good luck on your way to find the right web host ;)
