I think, that you have already seen a couple of this kind of offers around the Internet while doing a search for a hosting package. There is, from my experience, at least one banner at every review site or forum, which offers an unlimited offer when you visit them
You can not really go around this and you would always come across such an offer even if you would really try to avoid them.
The one thing is the offer and the other is the reality after you sign up with such a company. You just find out, that even unlimited has many times it’s limits. And sometimes they are even very low and it just depends on which host you have chosen on your search. And this is why I would always recommend to check the host out before you sign for an unlimited hosting package.
Is unlimited hosting really possible?
Frankly, I would like to take this question from another angle: Are you able to offer anything that is based on hardware and it’s size as unlimited? There are always limits on the hardware and these are hard limits and you just can’t go over them! And not even the host can!
- If you, at home, have a PC with 120GB of harddrive are you able to put a 160GB file on it? Well, no!
- And if you have a 100mbit/s [12.5MB/s] link to your house are you able to download 25MB/s? Absolutely not!!!
- If you have 512MB of RAM and a software needs 1500MB of RAM at any given time are you able to run it? NO!
And it’s the same with web hosting. You should know, that servers are really heavy duty machines and they can perform really good. They are able to handle thousands of requests. They can withstand heavy traffic, but even they have limits beyond which they cannot go!
What are the limits
Each hosting company has limits and their limits are set with the hardware they have at their disposal. Each company has a set number of servers with a set amount of HDD space and RAM available at each server. They have a network cable running to their data-centers and these cables can’t provide more bandwidth, than the total troughput of the cable/connection! These are all limits the company can’t go beyond!

And all these resources are than being sold to their customers. Some companies like to advertise, that they allow you to use unlimited bandwidth or unlimited web space, but in fact they are not able to. They always have a policy in place and there are written the limits which you can not go beyond.
These limits include, but are not limited to:
- Maximum concurrent database connections
- Fair share bandwidth usage
- Fair share web space usage
- etc.
And you would not like to know what happens if you brake such a limit. If the server which you are on is heavily oversold there could be a rule in the ToS or FUP which would even enable the host to shut your account down or move you to a more expensive hosting plan… . Always read the ToS when signing with an “unlimited plan” to know what happens if you go beyond the “unlimited” part of your contract
I would suggets you are really careful before going with “unlimited”, but at the current time even very reputable companies started to offer “unlimited” plans as it is a great marketing move. Always be prepared that there are limits and you are not unlimited, you are just left to use the resources as far as you do not hurt the companies business model or limit other users on the server.
It’s currently raining outside, but I widh you a nice day and good luck on your seacrh! Come back soon and leave a reply with your own experience with unlimited plans
