How much server space do I need? WH Tutorial

I hope you liked the last article although it did not bring a lot of new things to you. It should make you think, because making decisions is about thinking.

Now let’s start with the real business! In this article I will start with my explanation of the basic terms, but I can not guarantee you I will explain them all in a single article. I will try very hard to not forget about anything, but do not only count on my words here and try to find out more about certain topics you think are not discussed in such a depth as you would like. You can still write a comment under the article and I will try to provide some update of the article.

I think, that a basic term anyone will come across in web hosting, is the WEB SPACE/SPACE/DISK SPACE term. Keep in mind, that different hosts can call this with different names.

What I understand under this term:

Web Space, Disk Space etc. is the amount of space available to you [the user] on the server of your host. It’s the maximum amount of space you are allowed to use. Let’s say you wan to host your web site with a host whose package states you are allocated 100MB of Disk Space. This mean your website [including images, text, scripts, video, audio etc.] can not reach more than 100MB! What happens after you reach it is beyond the scope of this article and it will be discussed in one of the next articles. Basically it depends on the host, but first of all and most obvious you will not be able to upload any more files ’till you do not free up some space.

Now we know what it is, but hey, we still do not how you calculate it Icethunder! OK folks, it’s pretty easy. This feature is a crucial one, but you fill soon find out, that it’s the easiest one to conform to, calculate and control!

Web sites differ very much in size and technology used and so it’s hard to write down one simple formula. The used technology greatly influences the amount of size. There can be big differences between various technologies, but I think, that the simplest way to calculate the amount of space your web site will use [or is using] is to calculate it this way:

html/php/jscript/.net files in your home directory and sub directories + all images used and stored in your home directory and sub_directories + all media [video/audio] stored in your home and sub_directories + anything else stored in your home or sub_directories = TOTAL DISK SIZE you consume/use/will need

And what if you do not have your files already on a server? Well, this is even simpler – you need to make the same calculations -> you always need to find out how much data you will initially upload on your server and never forget, that probably you will want to update your web site with new stuff so always choose a bigger amount of SPACE, than your calculations. You can even make an estimation on how much space you will need and decide beforehand.

I will tell you, that if you want to use a community management system [or short CMS] like Joomla, Typo3, Plone, e107.org or others you will need between 4 to 30 MB of initial space. Remember this number is the default installation without your images, media and other files!!!

As I said earlier the amount of space differs a lot between technologies used! A good way if you are a tech-guy is to download WAMPSERVER and play with it for a little while! It’s a great way how to build and test your web site simulating real server environment.

As you can see I only managed to discuss a single expression in this article as I don’t want to make them too long, but do not be unhappy I will continue in my next articles! Have a nice day and do not forget to leave your comments under this article if you want me come back and to explain something in more detail….
