Hostlatch moving to become a part of GigeVPS [half-time review]

At the start of this year I have been thinking hard about what companies to review. I definitely knew I want to write reviews of shared hosting providers, but I wanted to bring something more. And so I decided it would be nice to take a closer look at some VPS providers. I decided to at least take a small look at two or three VPS companies per year.

Why I have choosen Hostlatch and how did I do it?

I waited for a long time and screened the webhostingtalk.com’s “offers” section to find the right VPS offer to start with. One such VPS offer came from Hostlatch.net…. It was a very attractive offer with really tons of resources, but I knew it could be oversold – at least slightly. Well, it did not matter so much as it was an aniversary package [they celebrated 1st year...] and thus I though it could be really worth trying it out. I bought the package and started to test drive it.

Why I have choosen Hostlatch VPS

  • it was a special offer
  • the price seemed reasonable [it was really cheap]
  • the resources offered seemed pretty good and couple this with an anniversary offer you could really think you will be able to use them all ;)
  • they were a new company [1year old], but looked they could be good

Any trouble on the way with Hostlatch?

Well, I can not say everything went smoothly at the beginning as there was a problem with my “VPS container” as it could not connect to the network nor I could get to it trough plain ssh or ping… I knew it was an unmanaged package and thus all the problems [or at least the majority of them] should be solved by me and not the provider. Although it was evident the problem has been somewhere on their side I tried everything to solve it first and only then to contact them.

I tried the ussual things like:

  • ping the IP of my VPS and from the VPS to ping google.com :) [+tracert...]
  • configure and re-configure the IP and network things in my VPS

but nothing helped and thus I contacted them by a support ticket. It was replied to in a short period of time and I my VPS has been reloaded and given a new IP, but this did not help either as the same problem persisted… Well, I responded to the TICKET with words it still does not work once again and on the third time they really made a good job and the VPS has been reachable :) Well two days lost, but it was not that critical to have my VPS ready under 24 hourso no problems there  :)

The takeover of HotsLatch.net by GigeVPS

I have been playing around the VPS for 3 months and my Hostlatch VPS review should only become an article here at Icethunder.net sometime in late September 2010, but things have changed as Hostlatch has become a part of GigeVPS. As far as I know GigeVPS takes over the unmanaged VPS business under the name Hostlatch and the owner [???] of HL concentrates on providing managed VPS services under another name. This is all I could get from the WHT forum and from emails from GigeVPS.

Until now I could not say I was happy or unhappy with my VPS as it really was used only as a test platform and the real test should come during the summer…In general the support of Hostlatch has been OK for me as they promptly reacted to my early problem. From then on there was no need to contact their support as everything worked fine. During my stay they changed the design of their web page and also the client area changed and the changes were for the better.

Well, I am looking forward to the next three months under GigeVPS and hopefully it will be a change for the better. Their email messages sound pretty good and thus I am looking forward to write the second part of this review in September.

Have a nice day and see you next time here at Icethunder.net by a review, news or “how to” post.

I understand your frustration. I am at the same company and my VPS has been hacked back when they were hostlatch due to some openvz issue [I suppose as my VPS has been configure only to accept traffic from my IP...]. Hopefully it was not a big loss and you will be fine and restore it somehow. Have a nice day and a great weekend!
