Basic Shared Hosting Guide

I have got a BASIC VPS GUIDE already on my blog and thus I think it would be a good idea to start a similar guide dedicated to the basics of shared hosting. As you already know there is not only one kind of web hosting. And each category of hosting has something special you need to know about.

In my VPS guide I am trying to give you some basics on how to initially configure your virtual private server and where to look for help and more information. Shared hosting environment is a lot different in this direction. You do not have to configure anything, because you are on a shared server. There are still some important things to know about it and these will be discussed in this guide.

Shared web hosting basics

This is just an introductory article and if you already know the basics and basic facts than just jump to the next one [or wait 'till new parts will be posted]. While on a shared hosting package you need to be aware of the fact, that the server is not entirely yours. There are many more accounts on the server and each account owner wants to use it. They have bought the hosting plan just like you did and they also want to use the resources, thus you should not be surprised that there are some limits on shared hosting plans. And besides limits set by the hosting provider there are also limits of the server. And from time to time you will notice those later limits when your web site load time slow done, become inaccessible or some other problem arises.

  1. Be aware of the limits!

  2. There are many different people on one server with many different web sites on the server.
  3. You share the resources with all of them!
  4. The operating system of the server limits what web site can be run and which cannot ;)
  5. Network link is shared as well.
  6. Many different control panels exist.
  7. The way you install some software might be different from host to host.
  8. You might be limited in what you are allowed to host and install on a shared server!
  9. and many more which we will discuss in this guide ;)

Have a nice day and see you next time at Icethunder.net!
