A short thought – what plan to choose? Go big or go cheap?!?

I was reading webhostingtalk’s “OFFERS” section and one I really interesting question came across my mind. What way would I go if I would be searching for my first hosting package? There are so many different ways you could go! And with this question still in  my head I decided to write a short article about it to help you out and give you some directions.

As soon as you decide you want to buy a hosting package your next step is to look around the Internet and try to find something there. It’s like when you are hungry and go shopping to buy something tasty to fight your hunger. There are so many options in the store on the corner and you need to decide. And decide quickly! You are hungry!

It’s nearly the same with your hunger for a web hosting package. But on your search for a hosting package you don’t really need to act quickly! When you are searching for a hosting package you should never act quickly and without enough information. You should always check the offer, check the company and only than make the purchase.

Would you buy e.g. some kind of candy you don’t know the producer of? You would definitely read the info on the candy, who produced it, the expiration date etc. But if you would see a well known brand of a candy you would just go and buy it, because people know it, trust it, you ate it before and you are familiar with the market ;) !

And it’s the same with web hosting. If you are a newbie you shoul not rush! Take your time and study the info on the “package” [the Internet in this instance] and only after  this make the decision.

Go big or go cheap?

That’s the question I wanted to tackle in this post right from the beginning, but I needed to tell you not to rush even if you know the hosting company, because marketing and advertisement is not always the best way to judge a company. Many smaller hosting companies can offer you great service and care about your problems more, than a huge corporation with thousands of customers, but the opposite could be true as well. That’s why you should make a thorough search and ask you future host questions, ask people on forums and read some of the review sites…

But as I told you many times before you should know these facts about the opinions/facts on the Internet:

A small facts & answers section :) :

  • Companies with the most advertisements around the web are not necessarily the best or most reliable ones, although they can be.
  • Small companies with offer at e.g. webhostingtalk.com should not be underestimated as many offer great level of service and sometimes even better than those with big $$$ advertisements!
  • Each and every customer is unique – thus every customer is different and if customer A had a problem with HOST 1 it does not mean you will encounter the same problem! But you might…
  • Beware hosting review sites as not all of them might be trustworthy. You should definitely trust more forums than review sites as those are earning money from affiliate links and most of the time it’s quite a big amount of money… .
  • If you decide to go with a starting host try to check him out even more! Contact the owner, support – try them out – what their response time is, how they react to your questions and how friendly they act etc. You should come with your own set of scan techniques ;)

That’s all from me for tonight, but I will expand on this post in a few days and give you more opinions as I will come up with something more about this particular topic :) Have a nice day and leave a comment if you want to share something with me and the community ;)
