I think the most seek for feature when you are moving from a shared hosting environment to a VPS or dedicated is a control panel. It does not need to be the greatest and most expensive one, but it needs to be an easy to use and learn one. I started this article in this way, because many people really can not live without a control panel. but control panel is nothing else as a front-end and it is very resources hungry when on a VPS or dedicated server. It eats up too many valuable resources and thus I would recommend to work with a free and lightweight control panel while on a VPS , but the best thing would be to leave it out completely. ;)

Shared hosting control panels

One thing I really liked when I started with web hosting some years ago was the power of control panels. You really do not need to know a lot, because control panels are there to help you out and make you life easier. The only thing you need to know is to learn the way your control panel works and where are its limits. As soon as you figure this out there is no problem and you can make your everyday hosting life easier.

In my experience if you set up everything correctly and you are with a good web host you will not need to visit your control panel any time soon. In fact I never went to my control panel after I set up any of my hosting packages. The web sites are easily controlled by their back-end. As soon as I set up my databases, import all data, restore necessary files and folders and create all email accounts and set-up DNS records than I never really use the control panel.

Is there only one single control panel?

It would be very easy and comfortable, but no. There are many different control panels out there. Some of them are more popular than others, but they all try to perform the same task: make the life of their users easier. I need to say that they are trying to make the life easier, but not all of them are successful. And the reason some of them are less successful has nothing to do with their look, but sometimes people really need a perfect panel and feel for the panel and thus some like one panel and other like another one. Certainly, there are bad panels and there are great ones as well, but at the end of the day it’s about the person who uses it ;)

Web hosting companies even provide their own control panels. These differ from company to company, but the majority of the functions stays the same and thus you should not be afraid that your new web host will not be able to provide you with a control panel function your old web host provided you with. You should be only afraid about whetehr you will be able to be as effectivbe with the new panel as you were with the old one ;)

Some well know control panels [not only shared hosting ones]:

  • Plesk
  • Cpanel
  • Webmin
  • WHM
  • etc.

To find out more about control panels and their functions definitely perform a Google search as these article only serve as a start point into the Shared hosting world ;)
